The excitement of end users generally revolves around camera capability, screen resolution or battery life. But leading smartphone brands are becoming aware of the value of the eSIM. All major smartphone manufacturers such as Apple, Samsung, Google and Microsoft have adapted to the growth of the industry, to offer eSIM devices. In addition to smartphones, eSIM-enabled laptops, tablets and hybrid computers are also plentiful and on the rise. In fact, handset manufacturers are even planning to have eSIM-ONLY devices as a standard by 2025. Although only a limited number of consumer devices offered eSIM capability during the industry’s take-off stage, most mobile devices will come with eSIM functionality in 2022.
This trend is embodied by the recent arrival of the iPhone 13.
The iPhone 13, a smartphone with dual eSIM devices support
For the first time, Apple’s latest iPhone offers dual eSIM support. Pre-orders of the new iPhone 13 will begin on Friday, September 17, with the official launch coming a week later, on September 24. All four of the latest iPhone 13 models (i.e. iPhone 13 Pro Max, iPhone 13 Pro, iPhone 13, and iPhone 13 mini) allow users to use Dual SIM with either two active eSIMs or a nano-SIM and an eSIM.
It’s exciting news for end users because the dual SIM can be used, for example, by those who want to use one number for business and another for personal calls, or for separate voice and data plans. It also means that users will no longer need a physical SIM card if they wish to use two different numbers on the same iPhone — provided their carrier supports it.
Prior to the iPhone 13, there was no way to use two eSIMs simultaneously. They only worked with an eSIM and a physical nano-SIM. It’s the first time we see a real extension of the dual SIM system being adapted to eSIM – which will enable even easier on-boarding of customers onto new operators.
Given Apple’s important customer base, we believe that the new iPhone 13’s new eSIM features will potentially increase eSIM adoption, as more operators push for eSIM as the primary means of provisioning devices.
Oasis Smart Sim has put up a list of eSIM devices available for consumers as of September 2021. Whether it’s Android or iOS, smartphones or wearables, you’ll find all the available eSIM-enabled devices in the market below:
